Dr Jan P J Ketelaar has a varied background in mining, tunnelling, shaft sinking, civil engineering, mechanical and policy and development advice. His experience as a manager, university lecturer and researcher has been very useful during the design, implementation and management of projects for development agencies and in private and public sector companies. During 2007 Dr Ketelaar completed a one-year contact as the Mine Manager of a new diamond mine in Sierra Leone. He is presently working on a new alluvial gold mining project. After graduating from the Camborne School of Mines in 1976, Jan Ketelaar began his career as a miner working in Cornwall and then as a mining engineer on the construction of a large underground hydroelectric power station in North Wales. In 1981 he moved to South Africa to work for Anglo American Corporation, becoming a section manager at a large coal mine. In 1984 he returned to the United Kingdom and enrolled as a postgraduate student in the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Having gained his doctorate, Jan built on his research to establish a solid career as an engineer and consultant to international mining and manufacturing companies and development agencies in the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, South Asia and Africa. Dr Ketelaar has developed a detailed understanding of the mining industry in Sierra Leone, where he has been working since 2002. His work increasingly involves interactions with donor agencies and government institutions and he has gained significant experience and understanding of managing and monitoring consultancy projects in the mining sector. Confident at all levels of interaction, Dr Ketelaar has advised the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Office of the President, on key mining policy issues. Dr Ketelaar’s industrial as well as his teaching experience has included environmental and social as well as commercial and technical considerations. His varied and broad range of experience enables him to provide authoritative advice on a broad range of topics including mining, engineering and government policy. As well as being technically capable, Jan has a gift for project and people management, delivering to tight deadlines and working in difficult political environments.
