Brief CV

Barrie has 40 years of experience in the mining and project development industries. He graduated from Birmingham University in 1966 with a degree in Minerals Engineering. His early career was spent in the UK initially associated with the processing of glass and foundry sands and then in Ireland managing processing operations at a complex base metal mine. In 1974 he migrated to Canada to join a major international project management consultant where he was involved in project engineering and construction management for clients in the base metals and energy minerals areas. From 1979 until 1996 he was employed by Billiton. For about half of that time he was involved in metallurgical consultancy, project planning and corporate strategy roles in the central office in the Netherlands; the other half being spent on secondment to Billiton operating companies. The most extensive of these were as the Project Manager responsible for the greenfields development and subsequent expansion of the Boddington Gold Mine in Western Australia. Other project secondments were to base metal projects in South Africa and Spain, while there were also operations management secondments to Canada and Ghana. In 1996 he migrated to Australia to join Acacia Resources to manage the development and operation of the greenfields Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. Following the acquisition of the company by AngloGold in 2000, he was made the Regional Manager and Director of all AngloGold operating entities in Australia and southeast Asia, until his retirement in 2004. He believes that his broad experience provides a solid insight into what constitutes a successful project and operation and into what constitutes a failure.
