Brief CV
Brian Coope graduated in industrial metallurgy from the University of Birmingham in 1968, and then joined the Aero Engine Division of Rolls-Royce where he gained early experience as a metallurgist and completed courses in business management at the Cranfield School of Management. In 1970 he joined Metal Bulletin on the staff of the then newly-launched publication "Industrial Minerals" and played a central role in its development, becoming Deputy Editor in 1973 and Editor in 1977. During his thirteen years with "Industrial Minerals" he prepared detailed studies on virtually the whole range of nonmetallic minerals as well as writing books on glass and refractory raw materials, editing directories and conference volumes, and organising international conferences. In 1983 he left Metal Bulletin to set up a consultancy specialising in the commercialisation of industrial minerals and has subsequently undertaken detailed studies on European and world markets for silica sand, quartz, silicon carbide, diatomite, barytes, fluorspar, wollastonite, iron oxides, perlite, vermiculite, gypsum, talc, slate, borates, potash, salt, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate, feldspar, kaolin and ceramic clays, calcium carbonate, limestone, lime, dolomite, magnesite/magnesia/magnesium metal, titanium and zirconium minerals, rare earths, gallium and germanium, niobium and tantalum, filler/extender minerals, minerals for agriculture, aggregates and construction raw materials, refractories and refractory raw materials, and glass raw materials. Clients have included major mining companies, exploration companies, mineral processing equipment manufacturers, financial institutions, government departments, and international agencies. During the past ten years he has worked on dimension stone projects in the UK, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Russia, and Australia. His direct input has focused on markets, marketing, and economic issues but he has worked closely with geologists and processing engineers with specific experience in dimension stone. He maintains a good database and network of contacts in this field. Brian Coope is a Chartered Engineer and member of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy; the Institute of Materials; the Minerals Engineering Society; the Institute of Refractories Engineers, the Association of Mining Analysts; the American Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME of AIME): and the American Ceramic Society.
