Rowan Karstel has traversed the full coal business circle from operations, technical, projects to business development. He has presented several papers at international conferences on mine optimisation and productivity improvements. Rowan has acquired international project management experience in Queensland, Australia. Locally, he worked as a Project Director for Klipspruit Mine Project near Ogies. Part of the responsibility was the optimisation of the proposed Western Complex which included Klipspruit Mine, Khutala Colliery and Anglo Coal’s Zondagsfontein Mine. As a consequence of ensuring the successful delivery of projects and new opportunities, he has acquired extensive experience in mining charter compliance and facilitated various BEE structures. His outstanding leadership attributes include talent management and succession planning. A significant amount of his time has been spent on mentoring, coaching and developing his managers. Rowan has a consistent first class record of exceeding the objectives of business through creating and sustaining shareholder value. He has achieved excellent performance reviews during his 18 years in the coal industry. Served at Director level at Mmakau Mining including responsibility for business development across a number of commodities. His other duties include the Chief Operating Officer at Mmakau Coal as well as director of several commodity companies (Shaft Sinkers, Hernic Ferrochrome, Eureka Gold, Dorstfontein Coal Mine, Forzando Coal Mine, Madibeng Platinum and Mmakau Mining).
