Oil Shale - a fuel lifeline

CMA staff have been involved in the identification, evaluation, testing and development of oil shale resources and technologies from 1982.

Resources visited have been in Morocco, USA, China, Mongolia, Brazil and Jordan.

Work carried out on oil shale has included exploration drilling and geological modelling, mining studies including two trial mining exercises in Morocco and Jordan, contract mining options, ore processing and potential beneficiation, oil shale blending and processing techniques and oil (synthetic crude oil) upgrading evaluations and market analysis.

Bankable studies have also been managed looking at operating and capital cost estimates and overall project economics under a range of prices for final products, as well as economic modelling to provide economic returns, sensitivity and competitive analysis.
