Brief CV

Cathy Reichardt has 20 years experience of mining-related projects throughout sub Saharan Africa, Australasia and South East Asia. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa with responsibility for the development of industry-focused environmental courses. Since taking up this post in 2004, she has developed an integrated suite of four postgraduate courses focusing on the management of non-financial risk for the mining sector that form part of the curriculum for the Masters courses in both Mining Engineering and Environmental Sciences. Enrolment for these courses has doubled since their inception, and the individual modules are also increasingly popular with industry practitioners as part of their ongoing professional development, and attract students from Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Nigeria as well as South Africa. Cathy has also developed and presented a number of short courses specifically focused on the needs of mining companies, financial institutions, government departments and civil society organisations. She also undertakes consultancy projects for a range of corporate clients and international organisations. Prior to taking up her current appointment, she was Environmental Manager for AngloGold’s East & West Africa Region, with operational responsibility for environmental and socio-economic management on mines in Mali, Tanzania and Namibia. She enjoys a close relationship with the World Bank Group and served on the Reference Group for the International Finance Corporation’s Compliance Advisory Office/Ombudsman function in 2002 and 2003.
